Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the above one-year fixed term contract (37.5 hours per week)
position as a research nurse, for appointment as soon as possible. Paediatric Neurosurgery has an active, dynamic research
program, fundamentally linked with paediatric clinical services. Our key research areas include traumatic brain injury and TB
meningitis. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Anthony Figaji, head of Paediatric
Neurosurgery, and Dr Ursula Rohlwink, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Neurosurgery at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s
Hospital. The main purpose of this position is to support research activities relating to a range of projects within the Paediatric
Neurosurgery Unit.
Requirements for the job:
• National Diploma in Nursing (Nursing Degree would be advantageous)
• Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
• Minimum of 2 years nursing experience
• Excellent organizational skills
• Computer literacy with a demonstrated ability in the use of MS Office Suite
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Strong patient focus
• Strong work ethic
• Valid driver’s license with reliable transport
The following will be advantageous:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in Xhosa / Afrikaans
• Previous clinical research experience
• Previous clinical experience in paediatrics
• Previous experience with neuro-patients
• Qualification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
• Previous experience with Microdialysis monitoring
Responsibilities:
• Performing all clinical observations and procedures as dictated by research protocols.
• Subject recruitment
• Sample collection
• Informed consent of legal guardians and assent of child participants
• Advise and guide participant on basic medical conditions
• Availability to work overtime and after hours due to the unpredictable nature of clinical environment,
• when required
• Complete all administration including transcribing research data into case report forms as needed
• Inform Study Coordinators of daily clinic progress
• Maintain patient records
• Arrange appointments and manage follow-up visits of research participants
• Liaison with clinical research team
• Assistance with routine medical procedures i.e. phlebotomy and labelling of samples
• Assistance with brain imaging protocols
