The University of Cape Town (UCT), and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) invite applications
for the permanent post of Professor/Associate Professor and Head of Division of Chemical Pathology in
the Department of Pathology.
The criteria for appointment
Basic criteria:
• MMed/FC Path in Chemical Pathology, or PhD highly relevant to the discipline of Chemical Pathology
in the division at UCT
• Minimum seven (7) years post-specialization, or or minimum of four (4) years at a senior academic
management level post-qualification of PhD
• Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Specialist Pathologist
(Chemical Pathology) or an appropriate medical scientist category
In addition, evidence according to the following criteria will be carefully assessed and measured for
the applicant’s professional and academic standing in 4 key areas:
1. Leadership and management
• Experience in managing an academic department in a university environment
• Excellent skills in leadership, and innovation
• Effective interaction with various stakeholders, and managers, at a national level
• Excellent interpersonal skills
2. Research & Development
As demonstrated by:
• International peer-reviewed publications
• Invited presentations at national and international scientific meetings
• National and international collaborations
• External fund raising
3. Teaching & Training
• Teaching of basic or clinical medical science from undergraduate to postgraduate, specialist and
PhD levels at a tertiary academic institution
4. Clinical & Social Responsiveness
• Experience in managing a clinical diagnostic laboratory
• Evidence of social responsiveness with a national impact
